Antarctica 2010 - Page 06
Friday, January 15, 2010, Neko Harbor, Antarctica
In Andvord Bay we disembarked at Neko Harbor onto mainland Antarctica, our 7th Continent. There were several Gentoo penguin colonies and remnants of an outpost. I hiked up the hill overlooking the harbor. We saw 3 small ice calvings.
We then took a Zodiac out around the harbor, during which 2 more ice calvings occurred, with the second one being pretty significant and sending out 2' waves!
In the afternoon we stopped at the British Port Lockroy, operated by 4 young women. First we wandered about the small adjacent island which had whale skeletons along with more Gentoo penguin colonies. Then we went over to the British huts from which the postcards that we wrote are being mailed. The Brits had a small shop so we picked up more tee-shirts!
Temperatures continue to be slightly above freezing, sometimes with a stiff wind and sometimes not.
After dinner we sailed thru the Lemaire Channel. As we emerged we saw 2 or 3 pairs of Humpback Whales diving down, blowing bubbles to force the Krill up, then following them up and eating the Krill.
It started snowing and deposited about 2 inches.
