Antarctica 2010 - Page 05
Thursday, January 14, 2010, Palmer Station, Antarctica
We headed over to the very windy Torgensen Island, which had 500-600 Adelie penguins. The chicks here were much bigger than the Gentoo chicks that we saw in Cuverville. We also saw 3 large seals.
We then went over to Anvers Island and the American Palmer Research Station for a tour of their facilities, plus a chance to buy tee-shirts at the (12' x 15') "Great Mall of Antarctica"! Few ships get to visit the Palmer Station research facility, but because we had Buzz Aldrin with us, they made an exception for us.
The Zodiac ride back to the ship was very wet because the increasing winds, 30-35 knots gusting to 50 knots had really stirred up the water.
As we were leaving the forward observation Chart Room heading back to the lounge we heard a loud roaring. We turned around and saw that a chunk of glacier had calved into the water and started to float away.
