Antarctica 2010 - Page 04

Wednesday, January 13, 2010, Cuverville Island, Antarctica

We headed back thru the Bransfield Strait. In the Gerlache Strait we saw half-a-dozen Orca "Killer" whales. The Captain brought the ship breathtakingly close to these whales and stayed near them for more than an hour. This expedition felt like a safari as we constantly searched for wildlife and observed it at a leisurely pace.
We then went onshore at Cuverville Island which contains a large Gentoo penguin colony with about 6500 nests made of pebbles. The weather continues to be partly sunny/cloudy with temperatures in the mid-thirties.
We sailed past Lion Island, into the Neumeyer Channel and onto Arthur Harbor where we ended up at the Palmer Station, a USA research facility on Anvers Island, 64.46.15 S x 64.03.42 W. After dinner Astronaut Buzz Aldrin gave a presentation.
