Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Weddell Sea, Antarctica
During the night we sailed thru the Bransfield Strait, turned into the Antarctic Sound and came out into the Weddell Sea near Snow Hill Island. In the morning we saw lots of ice floes along with some seals and Emperor Penguins. The captain rammed the boat into the ice shelf. Once it was determined to be safe, we disembarked and walked on the ice shelf to see seals and penguins up close! Valorie's favorite part of the trip was watching the penguins swim in the open sea. We were at 64.26.0 S x 56.51.0 W.
As we passed the Argentine Research Station on Hope Bay, I was able to use my cell phone to call the kids and chat for nearly a minute. It was the only time my international cell phone worked while we were at sea.
The after dinner presentation was about how in 1915, Shackleton led his 28 men to safety after their ship, 'Endurance' became caught in the Weddell Sea ice and eventually sank.
