Antarctica 2010 - Page 02

Monday, January 11, 2010 Deception Island, Antarctica

At 7:30am we passed into the Boyd Strait between Smith Island and Snow Island, part of the South Shetland Islands. The captain brought the front of the ship to within 20 feet of an iceberg. We saw some penguins on it. We learned that it is called an iceberg if 15 feet or more sticks out of the water. It is "bergy bits" if 3-15 feet stick out of water, and a "growler" if less than 3 feet stick out of water.
Later we saw Humpback whales. The temperature is ~32 degrees F. with a slight breeze, and there are scattered clouds.
We sailed around the doughnut shaped Deception Island and then sailed into the center via Neptune's Bellows. We first took a 10-person Zodiac around the inner portion looking at penguins, seals and birds. We then went ashore and walked around. We are at 62.59.02 S. x 60.33.76 W.
